The seventh son of a seventh son is the greatest thing to be in this overly superstitious town. It’s said that you will have amazing talents that will guarantee a bright future. Lan is this prodigal son. Eff on the other hand is not. Known as Lan's twin sister, Eff also has the unfortunate stigma of being the Thirteenth Child. The Thirteenth Child is said to bring doom to all they come in contact with. When their family desides to move we follow the story of Eff and Lan as they grow older, make friends, defy the odds and come to find themselves on the Frontier.
This book was written almost a whole decade ago and is also one of the first books I bought for myself. I have read it many times now and I always seem to find another reason to fall in love with it. Today is a prime example of why. My daughter Krystina came home from school sad. She was also frustrated because she didn't know why she was upset. And that's okay, but like any parent I wanted to cheer her up (which is why this review is so late at night). I immediately thought of this book. I remembered how Eff always had a lot of hard days after school in the story. I decided to go into my collection to find it and read it to my six year old to help cheer her up. We read the whole book in a few hours, and by the end my daughter knew she could overcome whatever was bothering her (which is another reason I chose to put up this review and not the original one I wrote).
The book itself is a very easy read as it is meant for a younger audience, which is honestly perfect for what I use it for. This is my go to book when I need a little inspiration. Even though the time period it takes place in is way before electronics, and there is magical elements, the story line could work for anyone who feels inadequate or just needs a bit of girl power with a dash of realistic fears. There is everything from body image fears to good vs. evil. Even as a work of science fiction, I feel many people will be able to relate to quite a few of the characters portrayed throughout the story, hence why I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
I think my favorite part of this story is the fact that I have been reading this as a stand alone book for over 8 years, without knowing this is only the beginning of Eff and Lan's story. That’s right this book is number 1 in a trilogy. I am so excited to get the next 2 books in this series, which you can order on Amazon or from Barnes and Nobles for hard copies like I will. This book is also available on Nook, Kindle and Audible. Again I completely recommend this book as well, if not for you then at least for any pre-teens you know.
