Zombies. Enough said, right? Wrong. Everyone assumes there is only one type of zombie, and for most stories you would be correct. But this isn’t like most stories. Before anyone even realizes what happened, the world is thrown into chaos. Getting bitten meant pain, seizures, and death. The change was marked by glowing red eyes and a hunger for human flesh. This story revolves around Diane, a survivor of the initial outbreak. Diane and her friends head out to the nearest military base where there is still some hope that humanity can survive. But when an infected person makes it through inspection, Diane loses hope when she is bitten herself. With seemingly nothing left to live for she runs with the intent to get as far away from people as possible to cause the least amount of damage. But when a week goes by without her going crazy like everyone else who was bitten, she decides to return, with just a few side effects. Diane now has the Heartfire, A Different Virus!
One of the main features of this story is the fact it rings true in a lot of ways. Between it taking place in the current time period of civilization and the military trying to take over, it gives a very clear perspective: this could potentially really happen. I love the fact that the story is so well thought out, the author had a clear sense of where she wanted the story to head as a whole. It felt like the story line was broken down very well into clear time periods. And those time periods were of a substantial length, which was great. Something that irks me quite a bit is when there is no way for the events of the story to take place in the time it was given. It’s like in any movie with a bomb scene, you watch 10 min of movie, but only 2 seconds go by on the countdown. Some books are like that, and I for one am glad this one was not.
The characters were so well developed that I had emotional reactions to some scenes in the book, which in and of itself is an amazing feat. Now I read a lot of books, this is a good and a bad thing. Good, because I get a new “movie” in my head all the time. But bad in that, it is hard to get super invested in a character anymore, as a lot of characters seem almost based on other books. Which is not to say that they are, but certain characteristics start to become repetitive after a while. I love that Diane was not your typical protagonist. She had flaws, she had doubts, she had fears, but she also had spirit and determination, as well as a sense of loyalty. That was very refreshing to say the least. It also made her more relatable, this added to the possibility that this could happen in today’s world.
This book definitely got 5 out of 5 stars for me. Unfortunately this book has not been published quite yet. But fear not you can read this story on Wattpad for free, and I definitely recommend that you do. I really hope that Ms. Scherer gets this book published and when she does you can bet I will be first in line to get a hard copy to add to my ever growing collection.
